Where is the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope right now?

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is in transit to the Sun-Earth L2 point, about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth on the side facing away from the Sun. It launched on 30 August 2026 and the cruise takes about three months, so today it is somewhere between Earth and L2.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched at 7:26 a.m. EDT on 30 August 2026, on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Ground controllers at Goddard began receiving telemetry seven minutes after liftoff. The observatory separated from the rocket 31 minutes into the flight, directly onto a trajectory for the Sun-Earth L2 point, and the Deep Space Network took over communications about 70 minutes after launch.

Its 2.4-metre primary mirror did not begin as an astronomy instrument. The National Reconnaissance Office transferred two Hubble-sized telescope assemblies to NASA in 2012, hardware built for a classified programme that had been cancelled, and one of them became this telescope after its optics were reworked for infrared survey work. The mirror is the same diameter as the one in Hubble.

What is different is the camera behind it. Roman's field of view is at least 100 times larger than Hubble's, so a single exposure covers a patch of sky about 1.5 times the apparent width of a full Moon at comparable sharpness, recorded on a 300-megapixel infrared detector array. That makes it a survey instrument rather than one pointed at a target at a time. Its main programmes are measuring the expansion history of the universe to constrain dark energy, and a statistical census of planetary systems found by gravitational microlensing during repeated observations of the galactic bulge. A coronagraph rides along as a technology demonstration, blocking the light of a star to image planets around it directly.

The cruise is the first part of a commissioning period of about three months, during which the spacecraft finishes deploying and its instruments are calibrated and tested. NASA expects to release the first images in early 2027. L2 is roughly 1.5 million kilometres from Earth, directly opposite the Sun, and Roman will not sit at the point itself: like Webb, it will circle it on a wide halo orbit, because the point is unstable and nothing stays there for free.
