Webb detects dust and water forming near Milky Way's central black hole

Observations of an evolved star near Sagittarius A* reveal that complex molecules survive in intense galactic radiation.

Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have discovered that dust and water can form and survive in close proximity to Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way.

Observations centered on the evolved star IRS 3 showed that it continues to enrich its surrounding space with newly created material despite the extreme radiation environment near the galactic core.
