Hubble discovers ten sided atmospheric wave around Saturn south pole

Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope have detected a giant regular decagon jet pattern in Saturn's southern atmosphere.

Observations by the Hubble Space Telescope have revealed a giant, evolving ten-sided atmospheric wave encircling the south pole of Saturn. This discovery is the first time a large regular-sided jet pattern has been observed in the southern hemisphere of the gas giant.

While reminiscent of the famous hexagon pattern surrounding Saturn's north pole, the newly identified decagon exhibits distinct characteristics. Atmospheric scientists are studying the feature to understand how large atmospheric waves form and persist in Saturn's atmosphere.
