NASA selects PRIMA far-infrared space telescope mission

The 1.2 billion dollar observatory will use spare components from the James Webb Space Telescope for launch in the early 2030s.

NASA has greenlit the PRobe Far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics, known as PRIMA, targeting a launch in 2033. The mission features a 5.9-foot far-infrared telescope designed to study universe evolution and cosmic dust.

To manage costs within a $1.2 billion cap, PRIMA will repurpose spare parts hardware remaining from the James Webb Space Telescope program. Once confirmed, the observatory will proceed into construction ahead of its next-decade launch.
